hedge trimming

A well-maintained hedge provides an excellent boundary to a garden but,  if left unchecked,  such a hedge can soon lose its shape and cast unwanted shade.   Whether you have an out-of-control hedge and need some help to tame it,  or just don't want the hassle,  call buzzcut in Milford Haven!

Pruning informal hedges depends entirely upon when they flower.   In Pembrokeshire's climate,  Lavender,  Fuchsia,  Roses and other plants that bloom on the current year's wood are best pruned in early to mid-spring,  but always with consideration for birds and other wildlife.

>> Seasonal considerations:

What time of year should hedges be cut?
As a general rule,  we only cut hedges in late autumn or winter, or early spring.  Cutting in winter means that wildlife will have the time to take advantage of the nuts and berries produced during late summer but,  if ground conditions make this difficult,  we will cut as late as possible in September / October.

Wild birds, their young, their eggs and active nests are protected under law and so hedge trimming during the breeding season (1st March to 31st July), should always be avoided and is a criminal offence:  almost every hedge in Pembrokeshire will be the home to nesting birds,  with some species continuing to breed into August.

>> Leylandii hedges:

The one exception to the 'no summer trim' rule is Leylandii.  These evergreen trees and hedges need regular pruning or will soon overgrow their location.

Many people don't realise just how big Leylandii can become, so many have been planted in inappropriate places and, left unpruned, can start to cause problems.  Conifers like these have small root balls, which means they can become unstable in high winds (all too common in Pembrokeshire!).  If your Leylandii hedge has grown beyond control,  it may be safer to have them completely removed,  or at least drastically cut back.

tree surgery

Trees and hedgerows play a crucial role in the natural environment of any garden, providing food and shelter for wildlife, and help prevent the ground from becoming waterlogged.  If neglected and allowed to become diseased or damaged, they can be a very costly liability to the home owner and landlord.

buzzcut offer a range of tree surgery services including pruning, lopping, crown thinning and felling within 20 miles of Milford Haven, Haverfordwest, Broad Haven or Pembroke.

>> Crown reduction, thinning & lifting:

Crown reduction describes reducing the overall size of a tree's canopy by selectively pruning the crown area.  How much reduction can be safely tolerated is determined by the species, the location and the overall integrity of the tree.

Thinning involves the removal of branches to increase light and air penetration through the crown, to lessen wind resistance and, therefore, the potential for storm damage.

Crown lifting describes the process of cutting back lower branches that may be causing an obstruction close to the ground.  Crown lifting also has the effect of reducing unwanted shade, allowing more light to penetrate to the lawn and other plants.

>> Damage & deadwood removal:

Broken or damaged branches, especially those that exhibit decay or disease, should be shortened or removed immediately, before they pose a risk to people, buildings and property. Be aware that timber exhibiting signs of disease or infestation may need to be treated on site to prevent the spread of specific diseases and pests.

If significant deadwood is present, it may be viable to consider other management options, even felling.

tree felling

Although the felling and removal is a last resort, there are circumstances when it is necessary.  Removal of a mature tree is justified if the tree is dead or dying,  is diseased,  damaged,  or represents a clear and present danger to people or property. . .  or if the tree is causing an obstruction that is impossible to correct through pruning.

Subject to local planning permission,  mature trees could also be removed to allow for new construction.

>> Straight felling:

This describes removing the tree as a complete unit and, because of the space required, is limited to situations where there is no risk of damage to property. . .  or danger to people.

Far less common than Dismantling (see below), when a trees is straight felled, guide ropes and wedges will be used to guarantee the direction of fall.

>> Dismantling or 'sectional felling':

Sometimes referred to as a 'controlled drop' or 'sectional felling',  this is the removal of a tree section by section,  from the top down.  Whilst a more time consuming process,  it is the only option available when space in a garden is limited.

For safety;  ropes, pulleys and friction brakes are used at every stage to safely control the felling operation.

>> Tree Preservation Orders:

This is an order made by local planning, National Resources Wales or, in parts of Pembrokeshire, National Parks.  Such an order makes it an offence to lop, uproot, cut down, wilfully damage or destroy a tree without the relevant planning authority's permission.

buzzcut hold a licence from Pembrokeshire County Council to carry out tree surgery work and felling, and are able to check for the existence of a Tree Preservation Order on your behalf.
